G.P. DE MONACO HISTORIQUE
May is one of the busiest months of the year in Monte-Carlo, and this year was an especially crazy one with the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique happening just 15 days before the Formula One Grand Prix de Monaco.
Join me at the two GPs (Grand Prix) from some of the best viewpoints at Monte-Carlo SBM’s top lounges and terraces where you can glimpse the track and these iconic cars during one of the greatest sporting events held in the Principality.
Celebrating its 10th year, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique is an unmissable event for passionate collectors and classic automobile fans from around the globe. The race takes place on the legendary Monte-Carlo circuit and can be witnessed all around the country about two weeks before the Formula One race. Drivers, classic car collectors and spectators gathered for this wonderful event that offers a step back in time for motor racing, featuring everything from pre-war racing cars to the F1 Grand Prix cars that date from 1973 to 1976.
As we head to my first spot of the day—the rooftop terrace of the Casino Café de Paris—we can already hear these powerful engines zooming around the Principality. Overlooking the Casino Square, this prime perch not only offers a great view, there’s also plenty of space and VIP service thanks to Monte-Carlo SBM.
I wanted to start the day with an elegant and classic style, and found this ensemble at the Brooks Brothers Monaco Store at the Yacht Club. My navy blue, lightweight suede penny loafers are a comfortable choice and match my white trousers and this elegant, Milano-fitted blue jacket that I layered over a grey cardigan and white shirt.
To complete the look, I played a bit with my accessories, adding in a beautiful pocket square and dotted bow tie that’s just the kind of minimalist design I like.
Before I move on to the next spot, I’ll tell you a bit about the timepiece I’m sporting today. I actually couldn’t find a better one for the occasion than the new Chopard G.P.M.H. (Grand Prix de Monaco Historique) Chrono, designed in 18K rose gold, titanium and steel, that was only just recently released in stores.
Inspired by the classic single-seaters from the 1970s, the grey dial perfectly compliments the 18K rose gold bezel and crown, while the stainless steel case back (stamped with the logo of the Monaco Automobile Club) adds a touch of contrast to the titanium case.
Before heading to the Casino de Monte-Carlo, I make a quick stop for a drink at the legendary Café de Paris—set on the same level as the track—and then head to the casino’s upper level terrace, where you can see the sea on one side and catch a thrilling angle of the race on the other as cars zoom around the end of the avenue d’Ostende and through Casino Square.
On my way to the third and final racing spot of the day at the Hôtel de Paris, I decided to look around a bit in the Casino de Monte-Carlo and took a hidden private access under the street.
This was such a great shortcut since the roads are closed during the race. Taking a look at my outfit on the terrace, you can see I made a few changes to the Brooks Brothers ensemble, now donning electric blue pants, a blue shirt and a cardigan topped by a grey cotton and silk jacket that I absolutely love since it’s a great mix of classy and casual.
Even my Vertu Signature Touch is related to racing today since it’s the Bentley edition. Designed with two-part Bentley leather in beluga black and hotspur red, this phone not only feels powerful, it looks it as well. The luxury phone perfectly captures both Vertu and Bentley’s shared design and performance ethos and is a real engineering masterpiece.
It’s also super tech savvy, featuring everything from a 21-megapixel camera to a fast and secure operating system and 24-hour concierge service that I’m quickly getting addicted to.
