My favorite way to start the week is on a beautiful terrace with views over the horizon, where I can sit and contemplate the days ahead. Holding a newspaper in one hand and my brand new blue Vertu phone in the other, I am ready to sip on a refreshing juice at the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo’s organic juice bar.
Today I am going to experience the ultimate well-being treatment: Cryotherapy. Perfect for businessmen as well as athletes, cryotherapy is designed to reduce stress and speed along muscle recovery after intense sports sessions.
This morning’s style is all about classic Brooks Brothers, with beautiful shoes, white trousers and a white shirt. It’s basically almost a fully white attire that looks super clean.
Don’t get me wrong. I know summer is over, but here in Monaco we like to extend this holiday feeling as long as possible. I’ve topped off the look with a sleek light blue jacket and Opticien Créateur shades with blue mirror effects by Chrome Heart.
Since I have to take a few important calls this morning, I brought along my Signature Touch smartphone by Vertu—the ultimate in luxury when it comes to mobile phones. Handcrafted in London with the finest of materials, it also comes with a dedicated concierge service.
Something that most people wouldn’t even notice is that beyond the fact that it is a masterpiece and a work of art, it also includes the latest in technology and service you could possibly imagine. Just try out the encrypted voice and message feature, as well as the global Wi-Fi, which allows you to connect to any hotspot in the world for free. This comes in very handy when I’m traveling and don’t have a good signal.
If you’re not familiar with the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, this 7,000-square-meter spa sits in the center of Monaco and offers treatments that combine the latest in science and technology with the most soothing spa experiences. Whether you opt for anti-ageing, slimming or deep relaxation, the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo will ensure that you’ll not only feel relaxed and instantly revitalized, you’ll also notice the long-term benefits.
Now it’s time for the cryotherapy treatment! It’s my first time trying it and I hope it’ll be good. Before entering in the room, I chat with the director about my goal for the treatment, which is pretty much all about relaxation. No metal pieces are allowed inside and I must cover the extremities of my body. At minus 110 degrees, our fingers would literally freeze.
Let’s go inside!
The first room’s temperature is set at minus 60 degrees, which is already extremely cold and that’s not even the main treatment room! After 10 seconds, I push open the large door and enter the negative 110-degree room.
It’s an incredible sensation; my breathing is getting shorter and I have difficulties expanding my lungs now. I must stay calm and control the cold that is penetrating my body. After what seems like an eternity, I hear the voice of the director over the microphone saying it’s only been 15 seconds.
I still have three minutes to go and I think and I won’t be able to stand it much longer. It comes down to a mental exercise focusing on control and concentration. As time goes on, my breathing become smoother and I’m able to fight off the biting cold sensations.
2.30 minutes … 2.45 minutes…. 3 minutes—now I can get out! It’s quite an odd feeling to be back in the real world, and I can already feel the treatment’s effects on my body.
The rest of the day I’m just going to sit back and relax, starting with lunch at Thermes Marins’s healthy restaurant, L’Hirondelle
Inspired by the Mediterranean, Chef Jean-Claude Brugel crafts seafood-based cuisine with light dishes that hover around 500 calories per plate—a great way to follow my rejuvenating cryotherapy treatment.
I take a seat out on the terrace overlooking the port and Rock of Monaco and dig into the organic salmon tartar with sweet herbs and fresh raw vegetables.
I’ve changed my look from this morning and have selected a different ensemble from the Society Club Monaco store for the afternoon. I went from a very sharp pair of shorts and shirt designed by Ermenegildo Zegna to Dolce & Gabbana trousers and a colorful Deny’s patterned shirt topped with a cotton jacket.
With these types of pieces, I can easily adjust my look for every part of the Thermes Marins experience, going from the restaurant to the pool and Jacuzzi area.
As the sun starts setting, I take a dip in the Jacuzzi overlooking the Port Hercules and Rock of Monaco. It seems like I’ve done a lot today, but I’ve actually only experienced a small selection of the spa’s services. That just means I’ll have to come back again soon and try more!
