Taking time off to go on holiday is not an easy task when you’re an entrepreneur juggling a ton of different responsibilities. Since I truly love what I do and tend to throw myself fully into each project, I don’t need to take vacation frequently to feel recharged and reinvigorated.
I do, however, regularly travel across Europe and other continents on business, so I always need versatile outfits and accessories that can match each and every one of my moods during these journeys: the “business”, the “relax and chill”, the “evening” and many other styles suited to some of the stranger destinations.
But wait—all of these styles have to keep in mind the characteristics I cherish: offbeat elegance, refinement and excellency. That’s when I discovered all of these elements are part of Berluti’s DNA. Created in 1895 by Alessandro Berluti, this house has over a century of know-how, passion and dedication in serving its customers, and just a few years ago launched complete ready-to-wear and bespoke clothing collections. Berluti’s creativity and timeless style matches my elegant state of mind perfectly. Each piece is made with superb attention to detail and the finest of materials that are so light and pure.
Today, I am flying back from Mexico, which was a long and exhausting trip indeed. I left the Aston Martin DB9 GT in the garage a few days ago and I’m happy to find it perfectly clean and sitting in the same place when I arrive.
Driving this elegant and powerful vehicle is always a great moment for the senses. At first glance, the design is pure grace, looking like a beautiful sculpture on the road. Inside, comfort and luxury touches reflect the passion and craftsmanship put into this seductive sports car. As I turn the iconic Aston Martin key, I can hear the sensational music generated by the V12, 540 horsepower engine. What a thrill!
No need to say I like to travel comfortably—especially when the journey is a long one—and today I am wearing a full Berluti outfit. While the house is known primarily for its elegant and classy shoes, you’ll be surprised by the quality and wide variety of sneakers they also make. I like these grey suede “Playfield” sneakers I’m wearing today that are both contemporary and comfortable, making them easy to combine with an infinite variety of styles. They also perfectly match the grey color of the Aston DB9 I’m driving at the moment.
Obviously I am carrying a bunch of travel bags. Let me get to the trunk of the DB9 to grab all of them. Well, if you follow my stories, you know my taste veers on the classic side, so it comes natural for me to pick Berluti’s collection that features a Venezia leather finish, a line of leather specially developed by and for the company, the result of years of research that allows patinas of an incredible transparency and depth. My Formula 100 suitcase is the perfect size for my short trips and it’s also a great size to move efficiently with.
Today I also have my “Jour-Off GM” travel bag. Great as a weekender, I like its classy design a lot and the way you can carry it with the two handles. To top off a marvelous combination of bags, I brought my backpack, perfect for a one-day trip or light hike. It is compact and reminds me of my student days. Now that I’ve gathered my exceptional set of bags, I can go and rest at the Hôtel de Paris.
Given that I had time to rest and change into another outfit more suited for appointments later, I decided to take the time to enjoy a nice breakfast at the Salle Empire. Today is a suit day, and I decided to wear the Berluti “Unconstructed 3 button suit” in navy. This is where fine details make all the difference.
Crafted with a soft and light linen material, the fitted suit features a leather collar trim and genuine horn buttons. I can tell you wearing a suit has never felt so easy. In the morning at the hotel, I kept on my white T-shirt and paired it with white “playfield” sneakers made of patent leather that are the perfect relaxed finish to my suit style.
Since I have a few business meetings planned, it’s time to up my level of fashion and go for the ultimate Berluti style of the day. A more formal white shirt will replace my tee, which is easy since I have a ton of white shirts in my wardrobe that can be quickly paired with a variety of styles. This is something I happen to share with Antoine Arnault, Berluti’s CEO, who said his sartorial habit was often to wonder which one of his seven or eight white shirts he was going to pick for the day.
It is also the right moment now to wear the emblematic shoes of the house. A pair of cacao Andy loafers made with Venezia leather ensures a perfect match with my leather bags. Incredibly iconic, these loafers are elegant and extremely modern, as if their design was absolutely timeless. Indeed, we have to go back to 1962 to find their origin, when Andy Warhol pushed the door of Berluti’s to order a pair of shoes from Talbinio Berluti himself. At this precise moment, Olga Berluti decided to create another shoe, secretly, with a flaw in the leather. She was ahead of her time and Warhol chose her design, which remains a symbol of the house’s creativity today.
I just have a few minutes to savour my Italian coffee in a small private salon at the Hôtel de Paris, so let’s take a quick look at my timepiece, the Classic Fusion Berluti ALL BLACK by Hublot. A symbol of the fusion of expertise between the two houses, this 500 model limited edition watch is the perfect combination between the art of watchmaking and the most emblematic leather craftsmanship there is.
Designed with a black leather dial signed by Berluti, the 45mm black ceramic case perfectly matches the strap made of legendary Venezia Nero-Grigio that’s marked with the characteristic “Gaspard” incision—an iconic and rare piece that defines the spirit of the modern and classic gentleman.
